Two Personal Poems, early ’70s

After the First Weekend
(It’s a shame–
but things could be worse!–
that I have to
write poems

instead of loving you
like I do
like we can’t
for the good of all.

And I was right!)

And Towards the Future

Whatever it may bring–

Our time together
teaches me more
about myself
and about my loves.

Our time together
makes me more whole,
more full of life,
more right with you.
Our time apart
sharpens my longing
to be with you
to hold you.
Our time is
new time,
good time,
for this time.
The future
can never
take away
the beauty
and the joy
of today.
